This podcast is hosted by Preston Tyree, LCI, Regional Coach, former League of American Bicyclists board Vice President, former League Education Director and recipient of the 2002 National Education Award, the 2016 Gail and Jim Spann Educator of the Year award, and League Life Member.

Episode 7:  I talk with Gail Copus Spann who has raced mountain bikes, acted as board member for BikeTexas and Board Chair for the League of American Bicyclists. She is LCI #1900 and a League Cycling Coach. She and her husband sponsored the Gail and Jim Spann Educator of the Year Award at the League. She also has a collection of Penny Farthing bicycles in her garage. Here is her take on what it takes to make riding safer.

Episode 6: Triny Willerton talks about her history as a triathlete and the aftermath of her serious crash while training. The big story here is her drive and determination and support from her family. Five months after the collision with a motorist that resulted in 12 fractures and a punctured lung among other injuries, she completed the IronMan triathlon World Championship in Kona. She points to months of therapy to treat her PTSD as part of the reason she can get back out on the roads again. She has started the #itcouldbeme movement to change the narrative between drivers and vulnerable users of the road. Aiming to educate all road users to recognize that we are all human and deserve to be able to travel safely for what ever reason and in what ever manner we chose. Episode 5: Jake Sigal talks about his history and the work his company is doing to make the roads safer for all users. They are getting close to having a standard that allows many manufacturers produce products that allow bicycles to message (talk to) other vehicles and infrastructure like signage. It is worth taking a look at his website, Tome Software. When you go there, click on the B2V link in the menu. One of the things I was impressed with was the breadth of the collaboration that Jake has managed to create between the Automotive, Bicycling and Planning organizations. And, Jake is a lifelong cyclist and has set up his twitter account to focus on cycling safety.

Episode 4: Malia talks to us from Hawai’i about the Hawai’i Bicycling League and her work training League Cycling Instructors. She has been instrumental in producing a video with the local bus operating company to train their operators to drive safely around cyclists and pedestrians. Link to Hawai’i Bicycling League Education program. Here is a link to a rough cut of the safety video that Malia took part in. At 9:34 your’s truly made an unsafe pass of a bus on the right side.

Episode 3: Doug talks about the joy of still having wheels he can use after breaking his ankle in three places jumping his mountain bike. Hand cycles have a place in the mix of devices we can ride. We also talk about riding safely in the neighborhood.

Episode 2: Rheannon, a bicycle racer and Law Enforcement Officer talks about bicyclist safety and has some tips on how to interact with an officer on the road. We also talk about the training that a police cadet gets in Austin and the various law enforcement efforts.

Here is a link to the law enforcement device (C3FT) that we talked about. This device is mounted on the handlebars and with a camera can give indication of how close a vehicle passes, record the pass, the reading on the device, and the license plate of the car.

Episode 1: I talk with Bill Nesper, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists. This interview was done as the Coronavirus became real to many people and Bill was still trying to make the virtual National Bike Summit work.
